Stormie Mills, Wellington St. The "fuck you Stormie" is a nice touch. Stormie hater?

blue & red

This is what I found during the archeaology adventure.

unplanned archaeology

Had a unexpected adventure on the weekend. Came across a vacant lot, and a friend stumbled on a nice glass bottle. With just a small amount of digging, he came across a whole heap of awesome stuff! Me, I don't have the gift for archaeology. All I got was a pocket full of sand and really dirty feet. I kept finding bones, broken plates, bricks, sticks, etc. He found bottles, an ink well, and a cool piece of a jug. Jealous. But it was fun, and addictive, I didn't want to leave in case some fantastic piece was just around the corner... But, we did have to leave eventually, with our loot.

red & green

A few random things in red and green. From the top: the "new" drawers I showed you in the last post, but now with a vase of what I think the lady in the shop said was "rose kale" (i.e. cabbage); wild rocket in a pot; close up of cabbage; stripey straws (yay!) a present from my friend Linda; on of the plates my mum brought me from Malaysia; footpath moss and Target shoes; more cabbage. I did the painting in the top photo. It's of the scenery from the road somewhere between Dowerin and Trayning. Trees, wheat, canola, rail tracks and sheep. Of course!

black drawers: before and after

Last weekend I finished renovating these drawers and moved them into my kitchen. I picked them up off the side of the road about 5 years ago but didn't have a need for them, so they sat in my garage being a very good home for spiders. Whenever I thought about doing them up I was a bit put off by the fact they seemed to have been painted with enamel, making it a bit of a tougher job to strip and sand than acrylic. After rearranging some furniture I had a gap which I wanted a sideboard in, but I couldn't find anything suitable... so I decided it was time to attack these drawers.

I didn't want to spend too much time or money, so all I did in the end was (after fumigating) give them a really thorough clean and scrub, attached the cheapest knobs I could find, spray painted the drawers with chalkboard paint and lined them with paper. Total cost was about $30.

I thought I might use the chalkboard paint to write on what is in the drawers, or draw on some patterns or something, but so far I haven't and think maybe just regular matte paint might have been fine. But really I'm pretty pleased with them for a cheap solution. Thank you side of the road bulk rubbish collection days, for again providing me with free vintage furniture!

pink, grey & orange

A few weeks ago I showed some photos of this mural while it was being done (see here). Now its finished. It's between Plaza Arcade and Murray St Mall if you want to go have a look.

rainy day cultural centre rainbow

I took all these at the Cultural Centre last week. Yeh, I know, you already saw photos of the purple cabbage here. Since I took these, all these strange little fluorescent things have sprouted in the urban orchard. I think they may be art. I can't see an explanation on the EPRA website (but to be fair, I only bothered to look for about 30 seconds). There are little bird houses, and things that look like cages or traps. All in very bright flouro colours. Yes, this would make more sense with photos. I will do that next week if they are still there.

Also they seem to be doing a lot of works on the paving, so perhaps all the little painted words are soon to go? That's probably ok. They are so cute and colourful, and I love them, but they are looking a bit old and dirty, so could be done over.

I'd heard about these little buggers on the internet, but not tried them until recently. Evil. Pure evil. Addictive. And so pretty. They are truly terrible things. Terrible.

blue, red and yellow

If you pop down to the Hay Street Mall, next to London Court, you will find this mural by Perth artist Clare McFarlane. I love how she has incorporated the features of the wall itself, the gaps and holes, or the little cluster of mushrooms growing out of the drainpipe. So if you are in town, drop by and have a look.
